Yes, absolutely. You can repay your car loan early at any time, with no early repayment fees or penalties. This gives you the flexibility to clear your loan ahead of schedule, reduce the overall amount of interest you pay, and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with being debt-free sooner. If you are considering making an early repayment, our team will be happy to discuss the options available to you.

Do I need to have savings to apply for a car loan?
You do not need to have savings with Mallow Credit Union, or with any other financial institution, to apply for a loan. Every application is assessed on its own merits, with careful consideration given to your overall affordability. As part of our lending process, we review your income and outgoings to ensure that any loan approved is suitable and manageable for your individual financial circumstances.

How long does it take to get approved?
Once we have received all required documentation and information, your loan application will be assessed within 24 hours. Our aim is to provide a prompt and efficient decision-making process, ensuring you receive a response as quickly as possible and can move forward with confidence. If any additional information is required, a member of our team will be in touch to assist you.

How much can I borrow for a car loan?
It is our responsibility to all members to ensure that we only lend members’ money to other members when it has been established that there is an ability to repay the loan. A borrower must be able to afford the loan repayments, including interest, over the full duration of a loan.

What documents do I need to apply?
Outgoings
- 3 months bank statements (most recent)

- Employed – 3 most recent payslips (if applicable)
- Self-Employed – Most recent set of accounts and latest tax returns OR Notice of self-assessment

Identification
Proof of PPSN – Medical Card, Payslip, P60
Valid Photo ID – Drivers Licence/Passport
Proof of Address – Utility Bill, Bank Statement dated within the last 6 months
Mortgage

How much can I borrow for a mortgage?
First time borrowers can borrow up to four times their gross income, second/subsequent borrowers can borrow up to 3.5 times their gross income.

What funds or costs should I be prepared for when applying for a mortgage?
You would be required to have a 10% deposit, solicitors fees, funds for the stamp duty, valuation and you will also be required to have home and life cover in place prior to the mortgage being paid out.
Current Account

Can I have an overdraft on my account?
You can apply for an overdraft on your Current Account from €200.00 up to a maximum of €5,000.00. The interest rate is 12% pa variable. Interest is only charged on overdrawn balances. Your credit union does not currently apply surcharge interest (surcharge interest is charged by some Financial Institutions on unauthorised overdrawn balances). An overdraft fee of €25.00 is charged on approval and on each anniversary of the overdraft approval date. We will normally request you to provide payslips, bank statements, credit card statements and proof of rent payments (if applicable) for the last three months in support of your overdraft application. Overdrafts are subject to financial status and are not available to persons under 18 years of age. Terms and conditions apply. Credit facilities are subject to repayment capacity and financial status and are not available to persons under 18 years of age. Security may be required. An overdraft facility fee of €25 per annum or per overdraft sanction, whichever is the more frequent will be applied. You can apply for an overdraft in person in any office.

Can I open a joint account?
Yes! Both parties to the account must call into your credit union office with their proof of identity and proof of address to sign the application form.

Can I switch my Current Account to Mallow Credit Union?
Yes, you can transfer your account to Mallow Credit Union. Once you have opened a Key Account with us you can make arrangements to have your salary paid into your new Current Account and can set up payments in and out of your account. Card Safety Guidelines
With Card payments being one of the safest and most convenient ways to pay for goods and services many stores do not even touch your card and get you to enter it in to the payment terminal yourself since the introduction of Chip & PIN. There are always situations where this is not the case and it is important that at a minimum you always keep the card within your sight. Your Debit Card details can be used fraudulently even when the card itself is safely in your care, so it is vital to check your statements regularly. If you identify purchases that you didn’t make, you must report them immediately to your Credit Union or Credit Union Card Services team on +353 (1) 693 3333 available 24/7. Currency Conversion
Currency Conversion Calculator. When you use your Debit Card for purchases in foreign currency or ATM withdrawals in foreign currency, these transaction will attract additional fees and charges that are charged to your Current Account as they occur, typically on the date the transaction is posted to your Current Account. VISA foreign exchange rates will also apply and are subject to change. This currency conversion calculator allows you to see the foreign exchange rates set by VISA to convert from the transaction currency as well as the European Central Bank’s euro foreign exchange reference rates for the EEA country currencies and the fees and charges that apply. A low monthly fee of €5.00 applies and that covers unlimited Euro point of sale and contactless transactions, unlimited mobile and online banking and unlimited standing orders and direct debit processing. How do I start using my account?
Once your Current Account is opened you will receive a welcome letter from your credit union detailing your BIC and IBAN. You will need your IBAN to arrange to have your salary, benefits or other payments paid into your account and to set up payment of bills by direct debit etc. If you are registered for online access your Current Account is immediately available to view and use online or on the mobile app. If you are not already registered for online access, you can register online or visit your local credit union.

How will I get my statements?
You will automatically receive an eStatement for free on your Current Account every quarter, in April, July, October and January. If you have opted to receive quarterly paper statements, a charge of €2.50 will apply. You also have the option to request a paper statement for a fee of €2.50 per statement.

What documentation do I need to open a Current Account?
To open your Current Account either online or in your credit union office, you will require one proof of identity and one proof of address. Acceptable Proof of Identity: Current valid signed passport/passport card; Driving Licence – Full licence or learners permit. Acceptable Proof of Address*: Bank, building society or credit card statement (paper/e-format); Household utility bill (paper/e format); Revenue Commissioners current balancing statement or Notification of Determination of Tax Credit/Tax Notification. *Note: These documents must have been issued in the previous six months.

What is a current account?
Current Account, from your trusted credit union is a full service account that allows you to access a range of facilities, such as receiving your salary, paying bills setting up direct debits and standing orders to make regular payments. You can operate your account online and using the mobile app. With Current Account, from your credit union, you get a dedicated IBAN (International Bank Account Number). You also get a VISA Debit Card with Contactless payments which allows you instant access to your money so you can make a payment or withdraw money whenever or wherever you need.

If you are a member of a participating credit union and are aged 16 years or older then you can apply for a Current Account and Debit Card.

How do I start using my current account?
Once your Current Account is opened you will receive a welcome letter from your credit union detailing your BIC and IBAN. You can also lodge money into it in any Mallow Credit Union branch.

What are statements and how do I get them?
A Statement shows you the full list of transactions, in and out of your account within a certain period.
You’ll receive an eStatement for free on your Current Account every quarter of a year, in April, July, October and January. Your parent can request an e-statement too to review your transactions if you are under 16.

Can I have an overdraft on my account?
No, you need to be at least 18 years old to apply for an overdraft.

How do I transfer money out of my account?
Once you log in, click Payments >> Manage Payees >> Set up a New Payee. Input the info of the account you wish to transfer to. Then select “Make a Payment”, select the recipient account, input the transfer amount, date of transfer and whether it’s a one-off or recurring payment. Click Next, input your password to authorize the transaction. You will receive a notification and a message into your CUonline mailbox confirming that the transfer was successful.

I registered, now what?
Our online registrations team manually approve all registrations to ensure the member info is correct. You will then receive an email to confirm your successful registration. If information submitted does not correspond to the information we have on file for you i.e. old mobile phone number or incorrect date of birth, you will be asked to update these with your branch before we can process your registration.

I’m having trouble registering
If you are unable to register, you may have registered previously and your account number or email address is already on the system. Please contact our Member Services team via email (info@mallowcu.ie) or on 022-21121 to check this for you.

I’m not receiving OTPs (One-Time Passcodes)
If you have never received One Time Passcodes to your phone, check with the Credit Union that your number is correct on our system. If you are not receiving the OTP but previously have, please check you have signal on your phone. Alternatively, try requesting the One Time Passcode ‘via APP’, please note, you need to have permissions for app notifications turned on for this in your app settings.

It says I’ve been suspended
If you’ve been suspended, you may have inputted your password incorrectly multiple times. Our Member Services Team will receive a notification and re-activate your account or you can call 022-21121. You can also request a new password if you need one.

It won’t let me log in
Are you inputting your username and password correctly? Both are case-sensitive so you may be including or omitting a capital letter. Are you using the correct Mallow CU app? If the app isn’t letting you log in, you may need to log in via the CUonline+ desktop portal.

My fingerprint / facial ID login isn’t working
Your phone may have recently updated, and you may need to re-set these. Contact our Member Services team and they’ll re-set the biometric log-in so that you can re-record your fingerprint/facial recognition again.

Where do I download/print a statement?
With Mallow CU, you’ll have more than one sub-account within your account. These may include Current, Shares, MYCU and any other saving sub accounts you set up. To download a statement for one of these sub-accounts, scroll to “My balances”, select “View”, select “Dates”, choose the dates you want to include, select “Download” and the file will download to your device, where you can print/save.

Can I change my card PIN?
Yes. You can change your card PIN to something more memorable at most ATM machines. You just need to have your card available, enter your existing card PIN and follow the instructions.

Can I get cash using my card?
Yes. You can obtain cashback up to €100.00 when making purchases at participating retailers. You can also withdraw up to a maximum of €700.00 per day at ATMs located through the country and abroad. (Withdrawal limits at ATMs vary).

Can I use my card abroad?
You can use your card anywhere in the world where the Mastercard Acceptance Mark is displayed. Foreign exchange fees and charges apply where the transaction is performed outside the Eurozone.

Can I use my card for shopping online?
Yes. You can shop at participating websites using your card. Mastercard SecureCode is a free service that provides cardholders with additional security and peace of mind when shopping online. During the checkout process when shopping online, you may be asked to register for the Mastercard SecureCode service.

How can I request a refund on my Debit Card?
Members will have 120 days to dispute a transaction on their Debit Card for the following reasons: Duplicated transaction; Goods not received; Cancelled subscription not actioned; Received goods not as described; Refund not processed after 30 days; Transaction not recognised; Free Trials; Car Rentals. If you have identified a transaction that you are suspicious of on your Debit Card, you must contact your Credit Union or Credit Union Card Services team immediately on +353 (1) 6933333. In the first instance, you should contact the Retailer and request a refund. If the Retailer refuses to refund your money and you paid using your debit card, you should contact your Credit Union who may initiate a dispute with the Retailer to reverse the transaction. This is called a “Chargeback”. Members must complete and return a ‘Disputed Transaction’ form along with copies of any: Detailed cover letter advising the nature of the dispute; Proof of purchase; Evidence of the transaction; Interactions with the company (emails/letters). To be returned to their Credit Union to complete a ‘chargeback’ request.

How many debit cards can I have on my current account?
For each sole account you open will have one card. For a joint account each account holder can have one card in their own name.

Can I use my card for online shopping?
Yes. You can shop at participating websites using your debit card. When shopping online using your Visa Debit card, you may be asked to enter a password you created along with a one time passcode sent to your phone. This helps us to ensure you’re you and better protects you from fraud. You will receive details on how to set up your online shopping password with your Visa Debit card.
Nomination

What happens to my shares when I die?
Members of the Credit Union can nominate a person to receive their Credit Union Shares and insurance benefits (if any) up to €27,000 on their death. Any funds above the €27,000 threshold are included in the deceased’s estate.

Who can I nominate?
A member can nominate anyone; family, a friend or several people. It is important that members review their nomination regularly.

Can I change my nomination?
Yes, by filling in a new nomination form. You should update your nomination when there is a change to your personal circumstances (e.g. marriage, divorce or separation). A nomination is automatically revoked if you get married. So, if for example, you had nominated your sister in the past and you have since gotten married, you’ll need to update your nomination to name her again. Or, if you would prefer your spouse to be your new nomination you will need to name them, otherwise there will be no valid nomination on your account.

Can I check my nomination?
Yes, a member of staff will be delighted to confirm whether you have completed a nomination and who your nominee is.

What if my parents opened my account for me as a child?
If you joined as a child you would not have had a nomination form completed. Once you reach the age of 16 you will need to fill out the nomination form.

Is there a cost?
No, there is no cost for setting up or changing a nomination.
